THE DUKE OF PRUNES
this DVD and CDs will be on sale on the upcoming NOV 2014 tour
the ONLY MOI ALUMNI consistently performing the music of the MAESTRO with over 500 concerts on 4 continents since 2003
*Musicians who played with THE MAESTRO between 1965 and 1979 in a variety of non musical and musical settings, e.g., bars, concert halls, clubs, gymnasiums, and sports arenas
The MUSIC on this document runs from the surprisingly sublime ERIC DOLPHY, to the absurdly lyrical DUKE OF PRUNES,(with a nod to Igor) to sentimental tongue in (somebody's) cheek GO CRY to Hendrix meets Macedonia HEY JOE/FLOWER PUNK to everything in between, with lots of room for improvisation and broad brush blowing by the guys that were there when the whole thing started and 2 other crazy musicians, 1 of which was not yet born when the guys started.........
Sometimes they let that flame smolder when it needs to, or kick it up and it engulfs the stage, or they get engulfed by it, whether they want it to or not, and, oh yeah, sometimes the guys do get burned……
Every good musician knows that you don't try and make things happen with music, ESPECIALLY THIS MUSIC, you just get out of the way and allow it to happen, because as we all know music ain't just "black ants crawling across white paper",
(Nod to Don (Van Vliet that is)
the NOTES themselves don't do much by themselves, poor things, they just kind of sit there waiting
for the right person to come along and breathe LIFE into them, and that is done with ATTITUDE and
INTENTION, things that cannot be rehearsed or paid for, just LISTEN to 3 different strings quartets
playing Brahms or Beethoven and you will HEAR for yourself the difference,
or better yet listen to the words of the MAESTRO who says it best from this BBC interview
"For me it was always more interesting to encounter a musician who had a unique ability, find a way to showcase that, and build that unusual skill into a composition so that forever and ever afterward that composition would be stamped with the personality of the person who was there when the composition was created."
FRANK ZAPPA
BBC Late Show with Matthew Collings
"BBC Television Tribute" 1993.
The band goes back and forth from heavily notated material e.g.,
THE ORANGE COUNTY LUMBER TRUCK MEDLEY, to free improv in 5/4 over static harmony, to "what was that?" or better "why was that?", as you can always expect the unexpected either in the arrangements or the solos themselves, and there are some great ones here as well as some intergalactic interplay, how can there not be when the band is playing some of the most original music this side of Venus.............
So sit down, lay down, hang upside down, or stand up and dance if you want to, and laugh out loud, and sneer or snicker all you want.
THE MAESTROS music will be blaring from your TV screen, laptop, cell phone, or brain implant and all you can do is let it wrap itself around you because
MUSIC IS (TRULY) THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FOR THE UNINITIATED
(that might be you)
Since 1980 there have been various configurations of
MOTHERS OF INVENTION* ALUMNI
calling themselves either:
THE GRANDMOTHERS,
THE GRANDE MOTHERS RE:INVENTED
or
THE GRAND MOTHERS OF INVENTION
Each configuration thru the years
has included various MOI ALUMNI*
including:
Jimmy Carl Black
Napoleon Murphy Brock
Ray Collins
Roy Estrada
Tom Fowler
Walt Fowler
Bunk Gardner
Bob Harris
Dave Parlato
Don Preston
from various legacies and configurations.
Some were featured on a performance or two
while other have played together for years
*
Once upon a time there was an actual band called
THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION led by the amazing
MAESTRO of CEREMONIES and MUSIC - FRANK ZAPPA,
who had the uncanny ability of not only composing, performing and perpetuating his music thru every conceivable means possible with the technology available at the time, but also choosing the right
musicians to make the imaginary black notes on the page come to LIFE.
(68 recordings were released by the time he passed in 1993 with various incarnations of personnel, and the bands music changed radically when
THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION (1965 thru 1970),
became THE MOTHERS (1971 thru 1974)
and then
THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION AGAIN
and finally just
FRANK ZAPPA from then on.
It was at this time (1976 thru 1993) that the band ceased to be a non stop rehearsal performing band and the audition process became more and more difficult with musicians who would rehearse for 6 weeks at a time to go on the road and being told "I have a file cabinet of cassettes by musicians waiting to replace you" if you couldn't play the notes consistently every night for the length of the tour.
It is as impossible to consider the MOI as an entity without FRANK ZAPPA as is it to imagine
the MOI without the members who made up the first 15 albums foundation,
Jimmy Carl Black,
and
Roy Estrada AKA THE SOUL GIANTS
who were the foundation for everything else that would follow along with
Ray Collins,
Bunk Gardner,
Elliot Ingber,
Billy Mundi,
Don Preston,
Motorhead Sherwood,
Ian Underwood,
and much later Art Tripp.
While Zappa had tried different combinations of musicians to play his music, as can be heard on the endless reissues emanating from the ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST, the only musicians who stood
with him thru thick and thin in the beginning and formative years of the MOTHERS OF INVENTION
were the Mexican and the Indian of the group, and while some have snickered and/or sneered at their
supposed lack of "musicianship" no one can do the same in regards to their sheer MUSICALITY and what
they brought to the ZAPPA music table.
Would Frank Zappa have gotten to where he was without them??
maybe!
maybe not?
we'll never know....................
