HEERLEN
Don Preston is 82, Bunk Gardner a year younger. Together they were in the 60s also determine the unique sound of The Mothers Of Invention , the band of Frank Zappa. Today, they are still touring around the world as The Grand Mothers Of Invention. Last Thursday they played in Heerlen. With a setlist full of Mothers classics.
The legendary duo was supported in the back by its permanent drummer and meestermepper Chris Garcia, guitarist Max Kutner and bassist Erik Klerk, who we knew from his memorable show with The Magic Band, a year ago. It all came together initially after some difficulty and a sluggish start but after two songs they gradually increased the level to the expected high altitude. "Call Any Vegetable", "Absolutely Free" and other early classics were interspersed with more difficult pieces like "Holliday In Berlin ' and Captain Beefheart also came'Debra Kadabra'. Virtuoso as always.
There was jazz, avant garde, pop and rock. There was also nostalgia and lots of fun.
The way Don and Bunk numbers talked to each other was sometimes just as disarming.
Hilarious Anecdotes from the days of yore, the great helmsman of yesteryear. With
the necessary jokes, the two did not spare themselves. They then topped off the set
with an unparalleled version of 'Big Swifty' and 'Peaches En Regalia' to the audience roar.
The Grand Mothers Of Invention, aged but still in top form. And for the time being we won't get rid of them, as they appeared in Heerlen. Don Preston: "We're not really here, we're holograms.
Just like Michael Jackson and Elvis. Actually, I died last year. "
